I've been working on a freelance gig since August (content set backs) and I've been using Assembla to keep in touch with my cohort designer. I'm a coder/engineer, not a designer.
I got the idea of looking for something to help me manage my project after having used Basecamp
and hearing folks rave about it. Something was missing from Basecamp
though - I needed some technical organization with nitty gritty
features that a hardcore developer craves. There are actually lots of
options out there, but of all I've interacted with, Assembla fits the
bill.
The service is run by a good group of folks. I had some
email correspondence with one of them when asking about their
discarding of unused spaces (they call account projects "spaces"). I
felt a great attitude in the email and it made me feel better about
dealing with them, even though I'm not a paid member. Understand that I
would consider becoming a paid member if need be at a moment's notice.
The cost would simply fall to my clients, so it is no challenge.
The
service itself has a wiki, message board, issue ticketing, chat, etc. -
all the Basecamp-esk stuff. Although Basecamp doesn't have issue
ticketing to my knowledge. Now, the real value for a developer comes
with built in Trac integration and the shining star on top is the Subversion
(SVN) repository - which is in turn integrated into Trac. I've come to
use SVN at the office in everything I do and it has become invaluable
to me as a code-collaboration tool with my freelance partners. Not to
mention the more I use Trac the more I want to use it for every
project. It's really growing on me (perhaps an endorsing blog post for
the future?).
To summarize, if you work collaboratively with
multiple people over the Internet and need a cost-effective solution
for project and code management, I think Assembla is a great choice.
Highly endorsed!

<p>Once again, it's a pretty slow day for Met news. The most interesting story out there is Murray Chass's post on Omar's inability to multi-task this offseason. While I really despise anonymous sources, this does sound so stupid that it's probably true.</p>
